It’s a Wonderful Life - Healthy Relationship Lesson

If you haven’t seen this Christmas classic, you need to stop reading and watch it first! This movie encompasses a wholesome and sweet example of a relationship. George, the movie’s lead, and his wife, Mary, are super supportive, have a lot of history, and are so sweet and thoughtful to each other, it is kind of sickening.

To keep up a healthy relationship, we must communicate, trust, and love each other. Communication is essential and so is the way we practice is. When talking about something important or upsetting with your partner, consider setting ground rules first such as “no swearing, no interrupting, no yelling” to ensure that there is a conducive space to work out problems. Also, it’s important to remember to always treat your partner with love and care so that they always feel supported, especially during the holidays because L O V E is in the air!!

In the movie, we see these important tips come to life. This couple isn’t always rainbows and butterflies but instead, it embodies the hard work that it takes to maintain a healthy relationship. The biggest example of this is when George has his outburst that causes the angel to come down and show him why he should be thankful for his ~wonderful life~ (aka the whole point of the movie). George begins having, what seems like, a mental breakdown and is screaming and ranting about what bothers him in his hectic life. Instead of becoming mad and upset, Mary makes sure the kids are okay first and then tries to calm him down, when that didn’t work, George stormed out of the house and Mary followed to make sure he was okay.

In the end, of course, everyone is smiley and happy because truly, we all live a wonderful life, and hopefully we all have a wonderful relationship, one where our partner would lasso the moon for us.
